With the world becoming more focused on sustainability and thinking 'green', what better way to take responsibility for our waste here at Inverloch Childcare than to start a worm farm. A worm farm is natures most efficient way of breaking down leftover kitchen scraps and turning them into a rich fertiliser for gardens. On average, people who have a worm farm or compost bin have 90% less organic garbage that would normally go to landfill.
The Turtle and Penguin children all helped set up the worm farm with the help of our educators. Firstly they had to help build our worm farm, and they did this by attaching the legs to the bottom of the tub, and then added the next 2 trays once that was done they placed cardboard down and then put in handfuls of fresh dirt. The children then noticed lots of worms wriggling and yelled with excitement 'look worms'. The educators then spoke with the children explaining that our food scraps go in here for the worms to eat and then we can use 'worm juice' to fertilise our garden and help our plants, fruit and herbs grow. The children love helping empty our food scraps into the worm farm everyday. |
